Confederation for Kids

 

Manitoba Becomes a Province. 

Here is a brief timeline of the order of events as Manitoba became Canada's fifth province.

 

                                        Timeline – Correct Order

 

  1. Land surveyors from Ontario came to check out the Metis property.
  2. William McDougall headed to Manitoba and tried to get into Mb.
  3. Louis Riel was head of the provisional government.
  4. A council of Anglophones and Francophones set up a committee (Convention of 40)
  5. The Convention of 40 wrote a list of demands for the Canadian government.
  6. The groups of Anti-Riel forces got together.
  7. The Metis woodcutter Norbert Parisien was arrested as a spy.
  8. Norbert Parisien escaped and shot and killed Hugh Sutherland.
  9. Thomas Scott and his group beat and killed Norbert Parisien.
  10. Thomas Scott and his cohorts were imprisoned.
  11. Thomas Scott was charged with treason.
  12. Thomas Scott was killed by a firing squad.
  13. Archbishop Tache had been talking to the federal government about the colony’s future and they reached an agreement.
  14. Wolseley’s troops came to Manitoba to “keep the peace”.
  15. Riel feared for his life and headed to the United States.
  16. Riel was elected to the House of Commons as an MP.
  17. The Metis moved to the Northwest Territories and the USA.
