September 2011
This year in our ELA class, we will be looking at different genres (types of books). As we work on the different genres, I will add to this page with what type we are working on, along with the characteristics of that type of genre.
Genre - Myths
Myths are stories told to explain why something is the way it is today. These are works of fiction. They often have animals as characters and these animals can do things that they normally would not be able to do (such as talk). We have read some myths in class and are writing our wwon my Click below to see some different myths.

Your child is currently writing their own myth. Ask them about it.
Book Talk #1 - Myths
Below is the assignment and rubric representing the myth book talk. Your child has had a chance to pick a myth to read and is working on sharing it with us. In the book talk, the students will use cue cards to help them remember the information they want to share. All book talks must be completed by Friday, Oct. 28. When your child is ready to present, they can book a time to do their presentation. Ask your child when they are doing their presentation.

Genre - Biographies
Biographies are stories written about someone's life. The story is written by someone else. It is a work of non-fiction.
If the author writes a story about themselves it is an autobiography.
Book Talk #2 - Biography
Your child is currently reading a biography about a famous person. They will be doing a book talk for the class teaching us about this person. Ask your child who they are reading about and some interesting facts about that person.
Genre - Mysteries
We have been reading the novel The Westing Game. Each student has taken on the part of one of the characters. Check below to see their representation of their characters. The students have also written a little explanation about their character to accompany their picture.
